The Complete Guide to Bats in World Culture – What's the Significance of a Bat?

Bats are creatures that have been feared by humans for centuries. They are generally associated with darkness, death, and evil. However, there are many cultures around the world that actually revere and worship them as symbols of beauty and good luck.

Bats play a significant role in different cultural groups all across the globe. In some cases they're considered to be deities, while in others they're thought of as symbols of good luck and prosperity. To understand the significance of bats in world culture, this guide will explore their history as well as some notable symbolism examples from around the world.

Bats are mammals belonging to the order Chiroptera. Many bat species are insectivores, and most of those feed on mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases such as malaria. Some bats feed on fruit, pollen, nectar, or fish. Bats are found in many parts of the world, including Africa, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.

The bat is a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture. They are seen as lucky because they eat lots of mosquitoes. In ancient times, people believed that a bat would hang upside down from a tree and eat all the insects that flew by. Therefore they became a symbol of luck because they were the pest exterminators for those living nearby.
